Thirty minutes later, Voss watched Goldman make his way to his car. He hadn’t wanted to leave him out and unprotected. The man kept glancing around suspiciously as he stumbled along. After Goldman drove way, he headed to his truck and home. He wanted to go over to the wolves, but forced himself not to.

Reno was right. They wouldn’t be able to build trust if someone didn’t make the first move. By the same token, he had to trust his mate as well. He couldn’t worry about whether Colby would show him only half of the contents. He had to have faith he would show him the important parts, at least.

Voss checked in with security once he got back to the den. He alerted them of his new lover and requested a pass for him. No one could get into the community without a badge stamped with the den’s seal and a number. Each resident was a number now.

Then, he showered before heading to the kitchen to make dinner. He pulled together the meal and decided to serve it in the living area. The low couches and coffee tables made the room comfortable and unpretentious.

He’d just finished loading the coffee table with food when he scented fresh pine and snow. His panther sat up, delighted that his mate had arrived. Voss, too, was excited to see Colby.

“I see you brought a change of clothing.” Voss nodded to the canvas gym bag in Colby’s hands.

“I figured I may as well,” he said as they met in the entry. “I brought you a copy of the flash drive,” he said. “I made it myself so everything’s on it.”

“You turned the original over to Black Ops?”

“I gave him a copy, too,” Colby admitted, looking up at his lover. “Is that my dinner I smell?” A smile flirted with his lips.

Voss shook his head, eyes lit with amusement. “Yeah.”

“Do me a favor?” Colby asked, all traces of humor gone from him now.

“What’s that?”

“Watch it after?” he asked. “Have dinner with me and pretend I’m not someone who could be useful to you but a man you want to be with.”

The statement itself was telling, but the vulnerable look in Colby’s eyes said more. His mate was hungry for real affection.

“I do want to be with you, Colby,” he said honestly. “I meant what I said this afternoon.”

Colby held his gaze a long moment, giving him a considering look, and then he said, “I’ll put my bag away. Here.” He reached into his jeans pocked and brought out a small item. He tossed it to Voss, who caught it.

Voss looked at the item. He had planned to call the guys over to view the information later, but that could wait, he decided, and tucked the drive into a drawer in the desk across the room. He needed a separate study here, he mused, and headed to the kitchen to grab drinks and napkins for them.

He couldn’t always put Colby first. He’d have to work even when he was here.
